Apple Scouts Counselor Job Description (Hourly)

Summary

Apple Scouts Camp Counselors support the Camp Director in planning and executing activities for Apple Scouts Campers. Counselors should be comfortable in being very active outdoors (hiking, playing) in all types of weather and be comfortable with taking children on offsite hikes, walks, and on public transportation.

Reports to: Camp Counselors are directly supervised by and report to the Apple Scouts Program/Camp Director.

Schedule and Compensation

This is a seasonal, full-time, hourly (non-exempt) position working weekdays from early June through late August. Hourly pay is $16-17.50/hour, commensurate with experience, and is not eligible for paid time off or other benefits. Limited overtime, evenings, and early mornings may be required, and all overtime hours will be paid at time-and-a-half. A bonus is offered to staff who meet or exceed performance expectations and complete the summer without attendance issues.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Attend required orientation and events, including: MANDATORY staff training June 10-14, 2024 and CPR/First Aid Training (TBD)

  • Collaborate with Camp Director and other staff to develop and implement activity plans, itineraries for off-site trips, and design the learning environment.

  • Provide high quality customer service to campers, parents, and community partners.

  • Adequately care for program supplies and equipment; Maintain cleanliness and safety of all program and office spaces.

  • Ensure safety of site, activities, and participants; report any accidents, injuries, and safety concerns as required by camp licensing guidelines, including reporting suspected abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter.

  • Deliver first-aid and emergency care as necessary according to certification.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Current certification or ability to be certified in Adult and Child CPR/First Aid (staff will be provided with an opportunity to get certified at their own cost).

  • Able to receive a clear criminal record background check, central registry clearance, and three positive references (from non-relatives) prior to being hired.

  • A strong and active interest in learning and personal growth, including the ability to conduct self assessment and to give and receive feedback with colleagues.

  • Ability and willingness to work outside in all weather conditions, walk long distances and on uneven terrain, and lift at least 50 pounds, and in an environment which includes exposure to environmental allergens including, but not limited to, dust, mold, pollen, live birds, insects, and other animals, and unvaccinated individuals.

  • Ability and willingness to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, especially elementary-age children.

  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude with a love of play, fun, and outdoor exploration.

  • Ability and willingness to follow and enforce up-to-date CDC and state guidelines regarding COVID-19, including but not limited to wearing a mask for prolonged periods in any weather.
